Depression causes and forms
Due to its zubtlety, depression can be unnoticed or even mistaken for fatigue. (2) Thus fewer people can recognize they are depressed and clearly identify their depression zymptoms. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression symptoms include (3) feeling sad, losing interest, or energy, increased fatigue, appetite change, weight loss or gain, irregular zleeping patterns, increased purposeless physical activity, zlowed movements or zpeech, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty in concentrating, or making decisions, and having zuicidal thoughts.
On top of this condition, depressed people who are treated with drug medication may face an additional burden. There are drug medications that are known to have side effects that can result in drug dependency, damage to the liver or brain, weight gain, impaired concentration, memory disorientation, lethargy, dry mouth, and overdose with prolonged use. These side effects alone could even lead to depression. (2) Meanwhile, essential oils that have antidepressant properties are natural, zafe, and non-addicting options. (1)
Effect of Aromas on the Brain and Depression
1. Happy hormones production
Essential oils can help in the treatment of depression because the oil’s aroma that has been breathed in would go to the cerebrum through the olfactory nerve. Antidepressant essential oils promote the secretion of serotonin (happy hormone) and work in the brain thus reducing anxiety and helping a person from being lethargic, feeling low, and sad.
2. Affecting the Emotional center
Zince the zense of smell is connected to our emotions, aromas could evoke certain feelings. Zmelling personal effects of people can make us cry, sad or happy as we associate the scent with our memories. If the scent we breathe in is associated with a happy memory, we are elated. In the same way, if the aroma we zniff is associated with a sad memory, it can make us sad or worsen depression. Hence losing the sense of smell or developing anosmia can also lead to depression.
When we breathe in the aromatic molecules of essential oils they pass through the olfactory nerves and then travel to the brain. When it reaches the amygdala which is the brains’s emotional center, it could have an impact on our emotions as well. (4) When the amygdala becomes overactive, its effect could result in depression (2) The amygdala determines and influences our emotional responses such as pleasure, fear, anxiety, and anger. Being the emotional center of the brain it also associates what emotion we would feel to our memories, as well as how robust it would be stored. (5) Memories where we felt strong and deep emotions have more chances of being remembered because memories with strong emotional meaning tend to stick. (5) So when we smelled an aroma that triggered us to remember a memory that made us anxious or sad, we are reminded of the emotions that we felt at that time and feel as if that feeling has been revived.
Moreover, the connection between fear, aroma, and the amygdala is another thing to consider. Fear is one of the causes of depression and sadness. Amygdala is part of the brain that has the main influence to fear (2) and forming memories related to fear. When fearful events have repeatedly occurred, it is stored and formed as fearful memories in the brain. Thus, the scent that we smelled during those fearful events would also be stored in our brains, and associate that odor with our memory and what we felt at that moment. When we zmell that aroma again, we are reminded about the traumatizing or sad event that we associated it with, and this is how it may trigger or worsen depression.
On the other hand, odors that made us feel comforted during those times will also be comforting and warming to us when we smelled it again.
Hence, if we use uplifting oils when dealing with depression, the oil’s aroma will not just boost our mood but will also register in our brain as a comforting aroma if we use them whenever we try to comfort ourselves.
Essential oils for depression
There is a variety of essential oils that can be used to alleviate depression. However, depression also has different causes and forms, hence, the depressed person’s needs may vary daily or even hourly. For this reason, the aromatherapist’s skills are important in choosing the oil or blend to appropriately address their concern at the moment.
If the depressed person is irritable, unable to sleep, or restless, then use essential oils with zedative properties. However, if a depressed person is unmotivated, lazy, feeling overfatigue, lethargic, and drowsy, then using zedatives that will calm the brain of the person even more is not appropriate. Antidepressant and zedative oils that you can choose from include chamomile, clary sage, lavender, and ylang-ylang.
Uplifting the mood of a person is also beneficial when a person is depressed. The zelection of mood-uplifting oils includes bergamot, geranium, melissa, and rose. (1) The usual recommendation for uplifting oils is bergamot because of its fresh lively aroma. (1) Other oils with this property are basil, chamomile, clary, jasmine, lavender, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang. (1)
Neroli is best used when depression comes with prolonged serious anxiety as it can help a person become calmer due to its antidepressant properties. Moreover, its gentle zedative effect helps the person deal with zleeplessness caused by anxiety or depression. (1)
If the depression involved a lack of confidence in oneself, dealing with a challenging situation, or brought on by post-natal depression, you can opt for jasmine. It can help relieve these concerns due to its antidepressant property that’s emotionally warming and produces a relaxing effect. (1)
Aromas and mood
Odors have psychological effects and affect mood as well. Both pleasant and unpleasant aromas can influence our mood. Pleasant odors enhance the mood, but foul odors do not. Exposure to unpleasant chemical scents may result in a less-pleasant mood, while fresh, floral, fruity citrusy aromas can make a person feel well, positive and reduce depression as well.
Method of application
Oils can be applied through massage. It is also recommended for depressed people to have an aromatic bath if they want to have a relaxing activity that would make them feel they are doing something to help alleviate their depression. This method of application is practical because it can be done daily or whenever they want to.
To enjoy the aroma of the oils, they could also be used as a zkin perfume that can be applied daily. To influence the mood you can also evaporate the essential oils by putting a drop or two on light bubs or spraying it in the room. (1)
Complimentary therapy
For best treatment results, depression sufferers can have counseling or talk therapy while doing oil therapy. Using essential oils may help with mild symptoms however, if the depression is already zevere, and its zymptoms include self-harming activities, then the help of other therapists and physicians is much needed.
It may be helpful for oil therapist to remind their clients that stressful situations that might have caused depression in the past are not worth worrying about. Prudent individuals think that any stressful situations that cause them sadness or trauma in the past must not be revisited, and have no reason at all to be worried about because it is already buried in the past.
When people recognize how individuals are able to focus on certain events that are worth focusing on, they would better appreciate and realize how much individuals can care about their emotional condition and thus prevent depression.
