Displacement is a defense mechanism where you discharge your tension on a less threatening target. You transfer your feelings or behavior from the real cause to a person or object with whom you think you can safely release your frustration or fear. You may unconsciously do this by yelling, being more critical and often criticizing others, being argumentative, and easily irritated.
