A Finnish research showed that thematic writing enables us to see the importance of nature on general well-being in everyday lives. That’s why writing is valuable in analyzing our personal experiences and definitions of nature-based happiness.
Watching videos before writing
The approach used in this research is video watching followed by writing. The video that was shown to participants was the different scenes of Finnish nature. Regardless that they’ve watched a video before writing, they were still able to develop their ideas independently and creatively. Their responses mentioned the outdoor activities and their effects on happiness, which were not presented in the video. They stated their personal perception about how nature makes them happy and described their own experiences and feelings in more detail. The adolescents’ thematic writings showed that most of them did not have difficulties in conceptualizing the abstract concept of happiness. They provided examples of nature characteristics that could encourage, generate, or prevent a happy feeling. A lot of the participants were able to describe their experiences of happiness in nature in detail, describe their activities or elements in nature that promote happiness, and describe their mental state as well.
