Consumption of ginger can relieve abdominal distention based on the findings of the study conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, between June 2016 and June 2017. 178 post-cesarean section patients who are within 24 hours postpartum were invited to join this study. They are aged 18 to 40 years old. Capsules for the study were prepared by a pharmacist. 500mg of ginger was placed into a capsule, while no drug was included in the placebo capsule. The capsules of ginger or placebo were identical in size, shape, and color. Before the intervention, the participants were assigned into clusters. Then when the patients started drinking water and continued for 3 days, the treatment program began. During the intervention phase, the study group received 500mg of ginger capsules while the control group was provided with oral placebo capsules. Participants had to take two capsules three times after the meal. After several assessments, the findings demonstrated that from the first to the third day after the operation, the abdominal distention severity between groups was not different. However, on the fourth day after the operation, abdominal distention severity was lower in the ginger group than in the placebo group. Moreover, the ability to relieve abdominal distention was higher in the ginger group compared to the placebo group. (1)
